Welcome to 2023! This is a significant year for the National Construction Code, with NCC 2022 commencing on 1 May 2023 and the modern homes provisions commencing in most jurisdictions from 1 October 2023.
While the research, analysis and drafting of these projects has been the major focus of ABCB work in recent years, the job is not yet done. We now move into the production of guidance and education materials to help people understand and apply these new provisions correctly.
Last year a small group of people formed a Livable Housing Implementation Advisory Committee. I’d like to offer a big thank you to the people who worked on this Committee to help us refine and finalise the Livable Housing Design Standard.
New condensation handbook
The NCC 2022 condensation management provisions build on the NCC 2019 provisions to further reduce the risk of condensation in new homes.
To provide further support to practitioners on using the new condensation management provisions in NCC 2022 an updated Condensation in buildings handbook is now available.
The handbook expands on the regulatory requirements of the NCC with non‑mandatory guidance for designers, builders and occupants on potential strategies to consider.
Notice of Direction 2022/4 – Annual factory inspections for lead free plumbing products.
In 2021 the ABCB decided to limit the allowable lead content in plumbing products, which contain copper alloys and are intended for use in contact with drinking water, to a weighted average lead content of not more than 0.25%
This notice provides direction on the proposed requirement for annual factory inspections for WaterMark lead free certified products. The proposal is for a trial period concluding 5 years after NCC Volume Three 2025 takes effect.
