PAS 2090: New standard to support pharmaceutical sustainability and transparency
Harmonize environmental lifecycle assessments across the pharmaceutical sector
We are pleased to announce the publication of PAS 2090, Pharmaceutical products – Product category rules (PCR) for environmental lifecycle assessments – Specification. Developed in consultation with global experts, this standard provides the first pharmaceutical-specific PCR to support environmental lifecycle assessments (LCAs) of medicines that can be consistently applied on an international scale. It is designed to help pharmaceutical manufacturers and those carrying out LCAs align on consistent methodologies for assessing the environmental impact of medicines from cradle to grave.
As pressures grow to provide credible environmental data about their products, PAS 2090 helps organizations:
- Establish a consistent, pharma-specific framework aligned with ISO 14044
- Apply flexible approaches suitable for companies with different levels of data maturity
- Establish clear rules for documenting assumptions, boundaries, and data sources
- Prepare for emerging regulatory and procurement expectations across markets
- Demonstrate credible, standards-based sustainability performance to stakeholders
From packaging of raw materials to product disposal, this standard provides practical modelling requirements to strengthen environmental assessments, help align efforts globally, harmonize expectations, and facilitate transparency across the pharmaceutical supply chain.

We’re pleased to share an important milestone for the built environment industry
The Built Environment Competence Hub, managed by BSI and developed in collaboration with the Industry Competence Steering Group (ICSG) and the Building Safety Regulator, has officially launched.
The Hub is designed to bring industry together around competence in the built environment, providing a shared space to engage, learn, and exchange best practice. It will act as a central point for competence-related resources, insights, and guidance, helping professionals and organizations navigate what can otherwise be a fragmented landscape.
The Next Chapter of ISO 14001 Is Coming
The ISO 14001:2026 revision reflects today’s environmental realities – from climate risk to supply chain responsibility. While not a complete overhaul, the changes strengthen how environmental management supports resilience, compliance, and long term value.
