Global energy transition delay could lead to 3C temperature rise, research warns

Global energy transition delay could lead to 3C temperature rise, research warns

This is according to the analysis, titled ‘A Delayed Energy Transition’, from Wood Mackenzie, an energy research and consultancy firm, exploring the implications if the world experiences a five-year delay in transitioning to renewable energy sources.

In the event of a delayed energy transition, the analysis predicts a considerable decrease in annual average spending on decarbonisation efforts, plummeting to $1.7trn. This represents a 55% reduction compared to the expenditure outlined in the report’s net-zero 2050 scenario, which is in align with the Paris Agreement targets of 1.5C to 2C.

The analysis further highlights the total investment required could reach up to just $48trn. This figure is significantly lower than the projected $75trn investment outlined in the net-zero scenario.

High Court deems UK Government’s climate plans unlawful for the second time

High Court deems UK Government’s climate plans unlawful for the second time

May 24 – the High Court has declared the Government’s plan to tackle climate change and decarbonise the economy as unlawful, marking it the second time the Court has done so.

Previously, in 2022, the environmental organisations- Friends of the Earth, ClientEarth and Good Law Project- took the Government to the High Court over what they deemed a deficient climate action plan.

The High Court ruled in favour of the organisations, citing breaches of the Climate Change Act 2008 (CCA) and mandating the Government to revise its approach to net-zero emissions. The Government published the revised plan, dubbed as Carbon Budget Delivery Plan, in Spring 2023.

It bears noting that the plan was announced before the Government announced a series of key net-zero policy U-turns in September of last year, resulting in a loss of confidence within the nation’s green economy, investors and the general public.
