Major milestones reached at British hydrogen projects in maritime and chemicals sectors
A project developing green hydrogen technology for workboats has received more than £2m in government funding, in the same week that approval was granted for a new green hydrogen production facility at a British chemicals manufacturing hub. The Freeport East project, which is developing green hydrogen storage and propulsion technologies for high-powered workboats, announced earlier this week that it has received a £1.44m grant funding package from Innovate UK. A “similar” but undisclosed sum has also been contributed by Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
ADM and Bayer expand regenerative agriculture partnership in Europe
Following successful trials which reduced carbon emissions on farms by 15%, ADM and Bayer are expanding their jointly-delivered regenerative agriculture programme.
The businesses jointly conducted a feasibility study into the adoption of regenerative farming practices at oilseed rape farms in Poland last year. This work covered around 9,000 hectares and resulted in notable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Changes made to on-farm processes included reducing tillage, planting cover crops and companion crops, planning crop rotation and adopting organic and bio-based inputs to promote crop growth.
Companies can improve transparency on deforestation. Here’s how.
Leah Samberg of the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) and Tomasz Sawicki of CDP outline six steps companies can take to better understand and disclose their progress towards achieving deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains.
The 2024 CDP questionnaire recently launched. Through this, companies can report on progress towards eliminating deforestation from their agricultural and forestry supply chains. Investors and other stakeholders look to these disclosures to determine company performance on near-term climate and nature goals. However, recent analysis indicates that most companies remain far from achieving deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains even as they approach deadlines for climate and nature targets, and regulatory mechanisms such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

Nations urged to revamp Paris Agreement commitments to bridge global emissions gap
Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) has called for a revamp to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from nations striving to deliver the Paris Agreement, stating that climate ambitions across the globe could triple under a new format. The ETC has published new data exploring the roles of NDCs in delivering decarbonisation rates that are required as part of the Paris Agreement. NDCs are submitted by countries to ratchet up national climate pledges to account for the latest levels of decarbonisation. They establish emission reduction targets for 10-year periods and the next submissions are due next year.
