Registration for building control professionals in Wales opened on 31 January.

Individuals and organisations who wish to apply to become Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs) or Registered Building Control Authorities (RBCAs) under the new regime, will now have the option to select England and Wales.

The services for both registration processes have been updated and can be found here:

BSR will follow up directly with RBIs who have already applied to register in England and who indicated at the time that they would also wish to register in Wales.

However, if you originally asked to register for England only but would now like to register for Wales as well, please contact us.

There will be no additional charge for registering in Wales as well as England.

Participate in built environment industry culture change research – Can your organisation work with us to understand how to galvanise positive culture change within the built environment sector?

BSR recently published its first 3-year strategic plan where it establishes a vision to drive change and create a built environment where everyone is competent and takes responsibility to ensure buildings are of high quality and are safe.

To support this, we would like to hear from a range of built environment professionals to understand perspectives on industry ‘culture’ and get feedback on a culture change framework that is in development.

BSR has commissioned Verian, an independent research agency, to conduct small focus groups with developers, architects and designers, contractors, building owners, resident management companies, managing agents and building control professionals.

If you work in any of these roles and would like to participate, please contact Verian by email by 9 February 2024.

The focus groups are confidential and will not affect your relationship with HSE/BSR. The sessions will last 90 minutes and a monetary incentive will be provided for participation.

The future of foam

Interest in the everlasting nature of forever chemicals is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. With more and more manufacturers announcing their plans to phase out the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals in their most popular and effective products, the debate around ethics and innovation in science is also reaching its peak.

From a firefighting perspective, the journey towards phasing out PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) or firefighting foams from everyday firefighting activities has already begun with the Environment Agency (EA) publishing guidance on the restricted use of PFAS in firefighting foams due to the risk of groundwater contamination.

Since 1 January 2023, firefighting foams containing PFOA have only been allowed in sites where all releases can be contained. As of 4 July 2025, all uses will be prohibited.
