Geothermal Power: Cornerstone of the Energy Transition

Geothermal Power: Cornerstone of the Energy Transition

As the world seeks sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, geothermal power is emerging as a critical pillar of the global energy transition. With the urgency to achieve Net-Zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s 2050 target, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are at the forefront of energy development, comprising a combined 8% of global energy consumption in 2023 according to The Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy.

Aiming for Sustainable Urban Growth Using Low-Emission Construction Equipment

Aiming for Sustainable Urban Growth Using Low-Emission Construction Equipment

Sustainable urban growth focuses on smart land use, energy-efficient infrastructure and eco-friendly policies to support long-term development. Construction becomes crucial as cities expand to accommodate growing populations, but traditional equipment powered by diesel engines is a hidden source of pollution. Excavators, bulldozers, and cranes release carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions, contributing to climate change and poor air quality.

BESS and renewables in the Dominican Republic – a winning combination

March 5th at 11h Dominican Republic / 16h CET | Duration: 1h

Renewable energy is booming in the Dominican Republic, with solar photovoltaic systems and energy storage playing leading roles. In 2024, the country reached 20% renewable energy generation, edging closer to its goal of meeting 25% of electricity demand with renewables by 2025 and 30% by 2030. Recent regulations now require large-scale solar PV power plants to include battery energy storage systems (BESS) capable of storing at least half of their generated energy for four hours.

As an island nation without significant domestic fossil fuel resources, the Dominican Republic relies heavily on imported fuels for electricity generation. In this context, combining solar power with battery storage offers a powerful solution: clean electricity generation paired with the flexibility to balance supply and demand. Despite this promising outlook, challenges remain, including the high cost of integrating battery storage (estimated to increase project CAPEX by 30%) and regulatory uncertainty surrounding the remuneration mechanism for BESS.
