Air Liquide’s Technology Converts Ammonia into Hydrogen at Industrial Scale Air Liquide has announced the successful start-up of the world’s first industrial-scale ammonia cracking pilot unit with a 30 tons per day ammonia to hydrogen conversion capacity at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium.
This groundbreaking innovation demonstrates a key missing technology brick to a viable pathway for converting ammonia into hydrogen, and unlocks challenges of transportation of hydrogen.
This technology proven at the industrial scale for the development of world scale ammonia cracking plants enables access to low-carbon and renewable hydrogen for the decarbonization of industry and mobility.
The ability to efficiently transport hydrogen over long distances is a persistent challenge in developing a robust global hydrogen economy. Ammonia (NH3), formed by hydrogen and nitrogen molecules, emerges as a valuable hydrogen carrier.
It can be cost-effectively produced in regions rich in renewable energy sources, such as solar, hydro, and wind or other low-carbon power. A well-established global infrastructure already exists for the large-scale production, transportation, and utilization of ammonia. This allows for the export of ammonia from energy-abundant regions to end-users worldwide, where it can then be “cracked” back into hydrogen, providing a crucial component for decarbonizing industry and mobility.
Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe to showcase pioneering energy storage technologies
Taking place on 8th and 9th September 2026 in Barcelona, Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe will showcase pioneering energy storage technologies across the full battery value chain, with particular focus on stationary and industrial battery applications including data centres, ports, rail, microgrids, commercial and industrial facilities, and long-duration energy storage.
As Europe races to triple its data centre capacity over the next five to seven years to meet surging demand from artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital transformation, the continent faces a critical infrastructure challenge: ensuring uninterrupted power supply through resilient battery backup systems. The urgency of this challenge was starkly demonstrated by the Iberian Peninsula blackout on 28th April 2025, which left millions without power for up to ten hours and exposed vulnerabilities in grid stability.
With Europe’s data centre energy storage market projected to grow from 585 million euros in 2024 to 1.2 billion euros by 2034, Battery & Energy Storage Europe in Barcelona is positioning the region to seize leadership in this rapidly expanding sector.
Europe’s data centres consumed over 90 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024, with consumption expected to rise substantially as AI and big data workloads expand. This explosive growth, combined with stringent EU Green Deal objectives and the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, is driving unprecedented investment in advanced battery-backed systems that reduce downtime, optimise peak load management and align with sustainability targets.
USDA Announces Availability of $7M for Advanced Biofuel Production U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture is making $7 million in payments available to advanced biofuel producers nationwide through the Advanced Biofuel Producer Payment Program.
