UN-Habitat accepts applications from cities to host World Cities Day and World Habitat Day in 2023 and 2024.
The deadline to submit applications is 31 January 2023.
About World Habitat Day
World Habitat Day looks at the state of human settlements. The UN General Assembly created this day in 1985 to be observed on the first Monday of October. Celebrations include a highlevel ceremony, the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award presentation, and expert roundtable discussions on urban issues.
About World Cities Day
The UN General Assembly decided to designate 31 October as World Cities Day to celebrate global cities and their achievements. Better City, Better Life is the overarching theme of World Cities Day.
WHD & WCD Themes
World Habitat Day 2023 will be linked to resilient urban economies as engines of growth and recovery, and World Habitat Day 2024 to young people and their role in building a better urban future.
The topic of World Cities Day 2023 will be linked to financing a sustainable urban future for all and World Cities Day 2024 to the youth leading climate and local action for cities.
World Habitat Day and World Cities Day form UN-Habitat’s Urban October, 31 days to advance sustainable urbanization and share creative solutions and practices to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The selection committee will review all received applications and announce the host cities from 1 March 2023 onwards.
